The Joannites, who were strong fighters with a thorough knowledge of martial arts, dealt from the very beginning of their settlement with the fortification of what we call today The Old Town. The fortification works began by the Grand Master H. de Villeneuve, who repaired the Byzantine walls of Rhodes.
