Discovered in 1859, this Doric city was a thriving community during the 5 th century BC. Founded by Althaemenes of Crete, the city was probably destroyed in a large earthquake in 142 BC. In spite of this, it remains one of the best preserved Classical Greek cities.
There are remains of a 3 rd century BC Doric temple, an altar to Helios, public baths and a 6 th century BC cistern, which supplied 400 families. The 6 th century BC Temple of Athena Polias is on the top terrace, below which are remains of the Doric stoa, 206m long.
